Regardless of category, volume reduction serves the same downstream goals: decreased storage needs, lower transportation costs, and improved value from a scrap recycler. It also protects downstream equipment, since wringers, centrifuges, and briquetters all perform better on consistently sized, flowable chips than on tangled, unpredictable turnings.
